VII/36 Galaxy Redshifts (Rood 1980)
================================================================================
A Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts
Rood H.J.
<private communication (1980)>
================================================================================
ADC_Keywords: Redshifts ; Galaxy catalogs
Description:
The Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts was compiled by Dr. Rood to enter the
most accurate redshift for each entry in the Uppsala General Catalog
of Galaxies below 15000 km/sec, plus some fainter galaxies in the
fields of rich clusters, plus some southern galaxies. The catalog is
99 percent complete for declinations north of -2 deg 30 min and blue
magnitude (mp) brighter than 13 mag. The catalog was received in 1980.
The fields in the catalog are a sequential number in increasing order
of right ascension (1-3981); cross reference to the New General
Catalogue, Index Catalogue, anonymous designations from the Reference
Catalogue of Bright Galaxies, Third Cambridge, or other identification
found from the source material; B1950 positions, blue magnitude (mp);
and indicator if redshift from different sources differs much,
heliocentric redshift, rms error in the redshift, redshift relative to
local group, position in galactic coordinates, and source code.
Introduction:
The machine-readable version of the Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts (H.J.
Rood, unpublished) was received from Dr. P.J.E. Peebles (Princeton
University) in December of 1980. The catalogue was compiled by Dr. Rood to
enter the most accurate redshift for each entry in the Uppsala General
Catalogue of Galaxies (UGC, Nilson, P.N. 1973, Uppsala Observatory Annals,
6) below 15,000 km/sec, plus some fainter galaxies in fields of rich
clusters, plus some southern galaxies (usually those with accurate 21cm
redshifts). The catalogue is 99% complete for declinations north of -2 deg
30' and blue magnitude (mp) brighter than 13 mag.

Note on ID:
Sequential number for entries in increasing order of right ascension
(#1- 3981).
Note on UGC:
(Nilson, P.N. 1973. Uppsala Observatory Annals, Volume 6) number when
available or the supplement UGC number (AUGC) (Nilson, P.N. 1974. Cata-
logue of Selected Non-UGC Galaxies, Uppsala Observatory Report #5) from the
Fisher and Tully (redshift catalogue submitted to Astrophysical Journal
Supplement). The UGC is only available for northern galaxies and the AUGC
number has an "A" as the first character. All identifiers are left justified
in this field.
Note on Alt:
Other galaxy identification:
N = New General Catalogue (NGC),
I = Index Catalogue (IC), or
A = Anonymous designations from the Reference Catalogue of
Bright Galaxies (RC2; de Vaucouleurs and de Vaucouleurs, 1964)
3C = Third Cambridge number or other identification found from the
source material (cf. bytes 78-90)
Note on RAh, RAm, DEd, DEm:
Equatorial coordinates are from Fisher and Tully, other source or the UGC.
Note on mp:
Blue magnitude (mp) from the Catalogue of Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies
(Zwicky, F. et al. 1960-1968) or estimated from other published magnitudes
through an empirical relation, or estimated by the source of the redshift
(cf. bytes 78-90), or estimated by Nilson for the UGC. An individual galaxy
in a double galaxy system with Zwicky magnitude mp is assigned the magnitude
mp + 0m.7. For entries which did not have magnitudes, a value of 99.9 was
inserted in these bytes.
Note on n_z:
This byte equals one if the redshift of the given source (cf. bytes 78-90)
differs from another source by more than three times the combined rms error
of the redshift determinations, or by more than ~ 300 km/sec. This
information is not complete, i.e. some discordant redshifts are not
indicated. Otherwise, this byte is equal to zero.
Note on u_z:
This byte can have a value of zero, one, two or three as follows:
= 1, if the rms error (cf. bytes 52-54) is directly from the source (cf.
bytes 78-90)
= 2, if the rms is taken as 1.42 times the sigma_1 for the source as given in
the Second Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies (G. de Vaucouleurs,
A. de Vaucouleurs and H. G. Corwin, 1976) or is indirect or uncertain
in other way
= 3, if the rms error is of unknown reliability
= 0, otherwise, this byte is equal to zero.
Note on z:
Heliocentric redshift (V) from the source (cf. bytes 78-90) which generally
had the smallest rms error. For galaxies with high quality 21 cm redshift
determinations (rms error =~8 km/sec) from more than one source, the value
given here is generally from the source which constituted the greater number
of galaxy redshifts (i.e. first, Fisher and Tully; second, Shostak -- cf.
bytes 78-90). There are some negative values
Note on e_z:
The rms error (SigmaV) of the redshifts (cf. bytes 46-50) as determined by
the source (cf. bytes 78-90) in units of km/sec. High quality 21cm redshifts
have been assigned by Rood the nominal ("and realistic") value of 8 km/sec.
Other rms errors are derived from an analysis of differences between
redshifts from a given source and sources of high quality 21cm redshifts for
galaxies in common (cf. bytes 56 and 58).
Note on n_e_z:
A dash ("-") means that the rms error is from the redshift source.
Note on z(LG):
Redshift relative to the Local Group
V0 = V + DV
where DV = 300 sin(GLON) cos(GLAT). Some values are negative.
Note on r_z:
Coded source of the redshift, see the following table.
Major reference source codes are taken directly from "Index of Galaxy
Spectra" (G.R. Gisler and E.D. Friel 1979, Pachart Publishing House, Tucson,
Arizona). Sometimes these codes are followed in parentheses by the code from
"The Second Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies" (cf. byte 44)

Remarks and Modifications:
Modifications were made to that machine-readable version as follows:
1. The first record initially was IC 5041 which did not have
coordinates listed and hence as alpha = 0 and delta = 0 it
appeared first on the tape. The coordinates for this object
(from machine-readable version of the Master Object List, R.S. Dixon,
1977 in Compilation, Critical Evaluation, and Distribution of Stellar
Data, ed. C. Jaschek and G.A. Wilkins, D. Reidel Publishing Company,
Dordrecht-Holland, pp. 167ff) are alpha = 20h40m.5, delta = -29 deg
53' (epoch 1950 given to the same precision as the catalogue). This
record was then put in its proper place in the catalogue before the
remainder of the modifications were made. We would like to thank Dr.
W. Warren for the suggestion to look in Dixon's Master Object List to
find the coordinates for IC 5041.
2. A sequential counter was added to each record (#1 - 3981) which
represents the order of the catalogue in order of increasing right
ascension at epoch 1950.0.
3. For entries which did not have a value of the blue magnitude (mp) a
value of 99.9 was entered.
4. The designations of uncertainty (parentheses "()") and not newly
derived ("-") in the listing of the catalogue as received were not
included in the machine-readable version. These have been added but
in the form of a single asterisk ("*") or dash ("-") in bytes 56 and
58 (cf. Table 1).
5. The redshift relative to the Local Group V0 = V+ DV where DV = 300
sin l cos b was not included on the machine-readable version. This
quantity was subsequently computed by calculating galactic coordinates
(l,b) and utilizing the quantity of the redshift (V). Many of these
computed values were compared with the list as sent by Rood and
approximately 10% were found to differ by 1 km/sec. This is probably
due to differences between the galactic coordinates as computed at
GSFC and the coordinates used by Peebles. We have chosen to retain our
computed values since this would be consistent with the galactic
coordinates given herein.
6. Since the galactic coordinates (l, b) had to be computed to add the
value of the redshift relative to the Local Group (V0), these have
been retained in the machine-readable version for convenience.
7. The original logical record length was 80 bytes. A total of 16
blank bytes have been deleted from the original version but 26 bytes
of additional data have been added, so that the new logical record
length is 90 bytes.
8. 04-Oct-1995 Pmag value in record #3351 which was "****" set to "99.9"
