Southern Groups and Clusters of Galaxies
    Duus A., Newell E.B.
    <Astrophy. Journ. Suppl., 35, 209 (1977)>
    =1977ApJS...35..209D
================================================================================
ADC_Keywords: Clusters, galaxy

Description:
  The catalog is the result of a survey of film copies of the ESO B
  plates for southern clusters of galaxies. Because of the varying
  quality of the ESO films and the scattered placement of the fields
  searched, the present survey is not intended for use in statistical
  studies. Nevertheless, the clusters and groups are listed from a
  representative sample of nearby to distant systems that is spread
  across the southern sky. The catalog contains cluster identification
  number based on a right ascension, declination numbering scheme; the
  ESO field number (see ADC catalog 6030); position of cluster center on
  plate (in mm); concentration class type of cluster; estimate of the
  number of galaxies; asterisk for uncertainty assignment previous
  value; distance class; and previous designations.

Note on ID:
  Cluster identification number based on a right ascension, declination
  numbering scheme. These equatorial coordinates were determined with respect
  to a group of SAO stars. (ID = XXYY+ZZZ where XX = hours of right ascension,
  YY = minutes of right ascension and ZZZ = tenths of degrees of declination
  where the equatorial coordinates are at epoch 1950.) This catalogue includes
  all previously identified clusters and groups with delta <= -27 deg. The STR
  designation in the published catalogue refers to Stromlo,

Note on Fnum:
  European Southern Observatory (ESO) field number: The numbers of the ESO/SRC
  fields searched in this catalogue are as follows-
  23-25,28-32,34,45-48,50-51,53-55,57,
  71-76,79-86,102-109,111-112,114,116-120,
  140-142,144-150,153-154,158-161,184-186,
  188-190,194-197,200-201,230-232,235-236,
  238-239,242,283,286,288-290,293-294,322, 325,345,356

Note on Ldist1:
  Linear distance in the east-west direction of cluster center with respect
  to the southeast corner (lower lefthand corner) in the cluster map.

Note on Ldist2:
  Linear distance in the north-south direction of cluster center with respect
  to the southeast corner (lower lefthand corner) in the cluster map.

Note on Cclass:
  Concentration class or type (T) based on the visual appearance of the
  cluster and on the relative separations of the member galaxies as follows:
  C = compact
  M = medium compact
  O = open
  (This scheme is based on the classification as defined in Zwicky, F.,
  Herzog, E. and Wild, P. 1961, Catalogue of Galaxies and Clusters of
  Galaxies, California Institute of Technology

Note on NGal:
  Estimate, N9 of the number of galaxies within region covered by the obvious
  density enhancement. This estimate is not corrected for contamination by
  background galaxies and will reflect the varying quality of the ESO
  exposures (which causes the limiting magnitude to differ from plate to
  plate).

Note on u_NGal:
  An asterisk (*) is given in this column to designate uncertainty in the
  value given in bytes 34-36. A colon is given in the published version of the
  catalogue.

Note on Dclass:
  Distance class, D, based on the apparent Al brightness of the member
  galaxies where:
  N = near              V  <= 15000
  M = medium distant   15000 <  V <=  30000
  D = distant          30000 <  V <=  45000
  V = very distant     45000 <  V <=  60000
  E = extremely distant    V > 60000
  (based on calibration by Zwicky, Herzog and Wild - cf. reference in byte-30)
  Velocity (V) ranges are given in units of km/sec.

Note on Pident:
  Previously identified clusters and groups groups have been renumbered in the
  given numbering scheme (cf. bytes 1-8) but original designations and some
  references are given here.
  Note: not all entries in the catalogue which qualify as previously identified
  clusters and groups contain data for the fields:
  ESO number, x and y, T, N and D.
  References used in these bytes are given in Table 1. An asterisk (*) in
  these bytes implies additional information as given in Table 2 for the
  appropriate entry.

Remarks and Modifications:
  The original ADC documentation by Theresa A. Nagy (1979) was used to create
  this ReadMe file.

  The machine-readable version of the Catalog of Southern Group and Clusters
  of Galaxies (Duus, A. and Newell, B. 1977, Ap. J. Suppl., 35, 209) was
  received from Dr. G. Share (Naval Research Laboratory) in 1978. This
  catalogue was originally received on magnetic tape written with an ASC II
  character set and was converted to an EBCDIC character set. All known errata
  to this catalogue are given in Table 3.

  The following records have a colon(:) after the value in the N column but
  the machine-readable version after the conversion ASC II to EBCDIC no longer
  contained a colon so that an asterisk (*) was added to this version.
