It's been several months since the untimely death of our ADC friend and colleague, Dr. Thomas Sodroski. For those who have not already visited our "Tribute to Tom Sodroski" web site, it can be viewed at http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/sodroski/index.html.
In this issue, Beth Brown describes upgrades to the Astronomy and Astrophysics pages on the NSSDC web site.
We also describe streaming audio of the natural radio emissions of the Sun, Jupiter, and the Earth that is available thanks to participants in two NASA- sponsored education and public outreach programs.
(Reprinted from the NSSDC Newsletter)
NSSDC serves as the permanent archive of data from NASA astrophysics (and other space science) missions. In addition, in partnership with Goddard's Astrophysics Data Facility, NSSDC provides web-based and ftp access to data from various long wavelength missions and to the catalogs and tables of the Astronomical Data Center. Access to all these services and links to NASA and other astrophysics data services outside NSSDC/ADF are found at NSSDC's astrophysics page at http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/astro. This web page was recently updated to include new, corrected, or supplementary information.
The revised page follows the same style as the old version. The most visible change involves new text which describes the roles of the NSSDC and other NASA-supported SARC's (Science Archive Research Centers) in the archiving of astrophysics data. Embedded within this text are links to the web pages of NSSDC's SARC partners.
Additional changes to NSSDC's astrophysics web page include -
1. Minor changes to the list of "Services" accessed through this page.
2. Notably, the FAQ page was removed and replaced with a link to the NSSDC
Space Physics home page. The former NDADS link was removed and replaced
with direct links to the IRAS, COBE, and SWAS archive interfaces.
3. A new section added - "Noteworthy Items."
4. Links to NASA/ADCCC sites were pulled from "Other Resources" section and
listed separately.
5. "Other Resources" section modified slightly.
The tabular and graphical "Flight Mission Information" pages accessed from nssdc/astro were also reviewed and updated. A particularly useful new feature of both pages is the ability to access both the NSSDC Master Catalog (NMC) and the mission active archive/project website. To do this, a column was added to the tabular page at http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/astro/flight_projects.html. For the graphical interface at http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/astro/astrolist.html, the plot was mapped to access the NMC by clicking on the mission name and to access the archive/project website by clicking on the colored status bar (found to the right of the mission name). As before, queries to the NMC can be made from the two mission information pages. Additional changes are summarized below.
Summary of changes to http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/astro/flight_projects.html
(tabular interface):
1. Explanatory text was added to guide users of the page.
2. The list of missions was expanded to include other astronomy missions
with data held at the NSSDC.
3. Links were checked and updated as necessary.
4. A list of sponsoring agencies and their corresponding acronyms was added
at the end of the page.
Summary of changes to http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/astro/astrolist.html
(graphical interface):
1. Explanatory text was added to guide users of the page.
2. The list of wavelength-ordered missions was updated, which required a new
interface plot to be generated.
3. Links were checked and updated as necessary.
4. A text-only page was created for the graphical-interface to make certain
the pages were accessible to the visually impaired.
Two NASA-supported education and public outreach projects, INSPIRE and Radio JOVE now routinely allow web users to listen in on natural radio emissions from Jupiter, the Earth, and the Sun. The former project, the Interactive NASA Space Physics Ionosphere Radio Experiments (INSPIRE), is a non-profit scientific, educational corporation whose objective is to bring the excitement of observing natural and manmade radio waves in the audio frequency region to high school students. The latter project, Radio JOVE, is an interactive educational activity that brings the radio sounds of Jupiter and the Sun to students, teachers, and the general public.
Both projects now have sites that frequently stream audio of these natural emissions via the Web. INSPIRE streams Very Low Frequency (VLF) signals received at several sites in MP3 format. Listeners will hear the Sferics, Tweeks, and Whistlers that are familiar features of the Earth's atmospheric emissions. Links to these sites can be found on the INSPIRE home page at http://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/poetry/inspire/. Several Radio JOVE participating sites stream High Frequency (HF) signals. These sites are active for predicted Jupiter radio storms and for Solar burst activity. Radio JOVE streaming sites can be found at http://radiojove.gsfc.nasa.gov/control/online_obs.htm.
Availablity of the audio streams will depend on suitable observing conditions, hardware availability, and other factors. See the source sites for detailed information. At present, there are a handful of sites streaming these observations. More are planned in the future.
The following catalogs and journal tables are currently available from the ADC repository. The ADC gratefully acknowledges the CDS, and individual authors who have recently contributed to our repository.
See http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/acq_new_updated.html#new_list for a hypertext version of this article containing direct links to each catalog and journal table listed.
