                               INTRODUCTION

The ADC and its services were featured at the Astrophysics Data Facility (ADF)
exhibit booth at the January meeting of the American Astronomical Society
(AAS) at the Austin, Texas Convention Center. It was a pleasure to meet and
talk with some of you who attended. Your comments and suggestions on how to
improve ADC's services was most useful. ADC's users are also invited to
send their comments to us at the email address adc@adc.astro.umd.edu.

In addition to demonstrations of the ADC and ADF's services, the staff
at the booth distributed copies of the new educational poster entitled "The
COBE Legacy". See the article in this issue for information on this poster
and how to get it.

Staff changes are happening at the ADC. An article in this issue covers two
recent departures. New staff additions are in the works. We'll fill you in
on those next time.

The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is poised to become the format of choice
for many documentation and data applications. The ADC is actively working
on defining how it will apply XML for astronomical data tables. See the
article in this issue to find out how you can learn more.

The staff of NASA Goddard's High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research
Center (HEASARC) have released the latest version of their FTOOLS package.
Included is a new release of FV, a FITS file viewer and editor. This
release of FV includes versions for UNIX and MS-Windows. You can download
FV from HEASARC at http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/ or from ADC at
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_software.html .

A New ADF Poster: The COBE Legacy
                        James E. Gass (Raytheon ITSS)

The Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite gathered important measurements
of the diffuse infrared and microwave radiation from the early universe.
Analysis of these observations has furthered our understanding of the early
universe and cosmology. A new poster highlights the scientific discoveries
from COBE. Entitled "The COBE Legacy", this poster is available at no charge
for educational purposes. The COBE Legacy poster can be ordered on-line at
     http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/astro/cobe/cobeposter.html .

For more information, see the COBE Educational Resources web page located
at the address
     http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/astro/cobe/ed_resources.html .

Recent Staff Changes at the ADC
                        James E. Gass (Raytheon ITSS)

Since our last issue, two members of the ADC's staff have departed to pursue
new opportunities. Dr. Janet Weiland has left to join the Microwave
Anisotropy Probe (MAP) project team here at NASA Goddard. Before joining ADC,
Janet spent many years on the COBE project. As part of the Astrophysics Data
Facility (ADF) here, she worked both with the ADC and, with ADF's Dr. David
Leisawitz, on infrared and submillimeter data activities, including archiving
COBE documentation and data. With MAP, she returns to the challenges of
making a new space science mission a success.

Dr. Vince Kargatis recently left ADC and the astronomical community to foray
into the world of commercial software development. Vince is now working with
a Washington, D.C.-based firm that specializes in Internet software such as
turnkey courseware systems for universities. Before he worked on ADC's data
visualization tools, such as the ADC Data Viewer, Vince supported the ADF's
high-energy astrophysics data activities.

We'll miss you Janet and Vince! We wish you both the best of luck in your
new positions.

XML, Astronomical Tables, and the ADC
                         James E. Gass (Raytheon ITSS)

XML is the eXtensible Markup Language. It is an emerging standard for digital
information markup in a network environment. It allows information (data,
metadata, documentation, resources of any kind) to be expressed in a
structured, flexible, and easily parsible manner. XML allows for descriptive
tagging of any information resource. As a result, it will allow for powerful,
focussed, and efficient contents-based search and retrieval of information.

Valid XML files follow a given Document Type Definition (DTD). Like HTML,
XML has its roots in SGML. Unlike HTML, one can easily create a new DTD
for documents or other information resources as needed. For the ADC, its staff
is developing the ADC astronomical catalog DTD. Examples of other astronomical
applications of XML are the Astronomical Markup Language (AML) created by
Damien Guillaume, and NOAO's XML DTD for telescope observing proposals.

To learn more about XML and ADC's work in this area, see the ADC XML resource
page at
    http://adc.astro.umd.edu/xml/.

Newly Acquired and Updated Catalogs/Journal Tables
                    Gail L. Schneider (Raytheon ITSS)

The following catalogs and journal tables are currently available from the
ADC. Journal table J/AJ/116/1, The Southern Sky Redshift Survey
(da Costa+ 1998) has been removed from the archives pending corrections to
the MCG cross identifications.

We would like to thank CDS, AAS, Dr. Heinz Andernach at the Universidad de
Guanajuato and individual authors for making many of the listed catalogs and
journal tables available for our archival.

See http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/acq_new_updated.html#new_list for a hypertext
version of this article containing direct links to each catalog and journal
table listed.

                    ADC E-NEWS SUBSCRIPTION INFORMATION

The ADC Electronic News is published four times a year. It is a free service
that we hope you will find of value. If any of your colleagues would like to
subscribe, they may do so by sending E-mail to Majordomo@adc.astro.umd.edu
with the command

      SUBSCRIBE ADC-SUBSCRIBERS

in the body of the message -- not in the subject line. The sender will
receive two messages, the first is a standard Majordomo response and the
second is a "welcome" message. If you do not want to receive any more issues,
send E-mail to Majordomo@adc.astro.umd.edu and in the body of the message put
in the command

      UNSUBSCRIBE ADC-SUBSCRIBERS .

Hypertext versions of the back issues are available via WWW. These can be
found through the ADC home page, at URL

      http://adc.astro.umd.edu/

or ASCII text versions are also available via anonymous FTP to
adc.astro.umd.edu in directory pub/adc/adc_enews.
