                               INTRODUCTION

January 1998 has been an interesting month here at the ADC, to say the least!
On the up side, the ADC Data Viewer was opened to public access. Even though
this service is quite new, its being used more than 600 times per week not
counting users within Goddard or the demonstrations given at the AAS meeting
this month. We had a successful exhibit booth at the AAS meeting in
Washington, D.C., and our latest CD-ROM, "Selected Astronomical Catalogs,
Volume 4" came back from the publisher earlier this month, too.

On the down side we discovered that a premastering mistake made the initial
release of CD-ROM, Volume 4 unusable with Windows 3.x and DOS 6.x. To users of
those operating systems: we haven't forgotten you! We are producing Volume 4,
Release 2. This new release will not have that problem.

                              Recent Departures
                         James E. Gass (Raytheon STX)

Drs. Paul Kuin and Nancy Roman have recently left the staff of the ADC. The
ADC owes them both a huge debt of thanks for their energies, creativity, and
service. Both have done much to shape the ADC into what it is today. Paul
joined the ADC staff from the NASA Master Directory effort in 1992. Among his
many contributions were his work with Francois Ochsenbein of CDS in developing
the standard document format in use by CDS, ADC and their sister data centers,
establishing the ADC's anonymous FTP-accessible data collection, continuing
the ADC CD-ROM series, and heading the ADC for a period of time.

Nancy's service with the ADC began seventeen years ago. One can't begin to
give an idea of the scope of her contributions to the ADC in a few sentences.
But, since some readers may not know how important her work was to the ADC, I
feel compelled to try. Her commitment to finding and correcting any errors
in the data sets archived at the ADC is just one part of her legacy.
She developed many useful cross-indices between major catalogs. Nancy
developed standard documents for many of the catalogs at the ADC.
She headed the ADC for a number of years, during which time she was
instrumental in establishing our Science Steering Committee and coordinating
the ADC's efforts with those of its sister data centers. Dr. Roman worked to
make the community aware of the ADC's services and actively sought out
important data sets to make our services more valuable to the research
community. She also worked with students on many occasions to help them
explore their interests in science.

Once, during an AAS meeting, I was riding in the hotel's elevator with Nancy
and several other meeting participants. After some pleasantries, when Nancy
had gotten off at her floor, one of the other astronomers turned to me to
express her admiration for Dr. Roman and to comment that she seemed like a
member of the family. I understood what she meant perfectly. I can say that,
to her fellow ADC workers, Nancy will always be a part of the family, too.

Our best wishes go with Nancy and Paul.

                    Your Data Contributions are Welcome
                      Janet L. Weiland (Raytheon STX)

As part of its service to the community, the ADC continually seeks to update
and expand its data holdings. We welcome submissions of professional-quality
astronomical data in electronic form for inclusion in our archives. The main
requirements for inclusion in the ADC archive are that the data are of general
use to the astronomical community, and that the data must have been accepted
for publication in a refereed scientific journal, or alternatively, must have
been published in the "Bulletin d'Information de CDS" (which is also
refereed).

The submission process is relatively painless, although it does require that
some documentation of the data be provided along with the actual dataset. The
preferred delivery format form for tabular data is ASCII (compatible with
ADC's new data viewer -- see the Data Viewer article below.), and the
preferred form for image data is FITS. Documentation should also be provided
in an ASCII text file. Wherever practical, this documentation should follow
the CDS/ADC standard format. A brief description of the submission guidelines
is given at http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/submit_guide.html . More detailed
information may be found at http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/data_submission.html.

You may view a listing of our complete catalog and journal table holdings, or
search the data documentation files, from the ADC collections page at
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_collections.html. If you have an interesting
dataset not already in our holdings, or know of a useful dataset which you
would like to see acquired, please contact us at adc@adc.astro.umd.edu.

To the Rescue: Release 2 of ADC CD-ROM, Volume 4
                      James E. Gass (Raytheon STX)

The initial production run of the ADC CD-ROM, Volume 4 contains directories
and files named in all lower-case letters. So what's wrong with that? Well,
for one thing, it is not in keeping with the ISO 9660 standard. More
importantly, it appears to make it unnavigable on computers running some
earlier operating systems. The FAT (File Allocation Table) file system used
by Windows 3.x, and MS-DOS 6.x and earlier only recognizes upper case file and
directory names. Unfortunately, these systems still see the names on the disc
as lower case. I should mention that we have also encountered the problem on
a system running Version 3.51 of MS Windows NT. Windows 95, DOS 7.x, and
Windows NT 4.x are case-preserving, and the initial discs of Volume 4 work
fine with those systems. It also works fine with the other case-preserving
file systems we've tried (such as are used with various UNIX and Mac O/Ss).

For more detail on the problem, see our Q & A on the Selected Astronomical
Catalogs, Volume 4 at http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/cd4_explanation.html. Upon
examining our options on how to correct this problem, we have decided to make
a new production run of Volume 4 with the names changed to all upper-case
letters. We are calling this "Volume 4, Release 2" to distinguish it from the
initial release. Because the first set of discs are compatible with the file
systems used by most operating systems, we will continue to distribute the
CD-ROMs from the first production run. If you need to new version, be sure to
specify that in your request.

The Release 2 discs should be available in Mid-February. Please see
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_other_media.html#notice for ordering
information.

ADC Data Viewer Now Available for You to Try
                        James E. Gass (Raytheon STX)

The new Web-based data visualization tools that were described in the last ADC
Electronic News are now publically available. To try the ADC Data Viewer, see
its Web page http://tarantella.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/catseye/adc_viewer2.pl .
Users who access catalogs from the services listed at
http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/adc_collections.html will also be able to invoke
the data viewer from the standard document display page for most ADC catalogs.

These tools are designed to allow a user of the ADC archives to choose a
catalog though several ADC interfaces, see which of the files associated with
that catalog are capable of being "viewed", and then select catalog data files
for subsetting, sorting and viewing.

These tools rely on the byte-by-byte table descriptions included in the
standard ReadMe document. Please note that catalogs that don't yet have a
standard document cannot be viewed with this tool. Also, data files that do
not or cannot have a byte-by-byte description of the standard format (such as
FITS files) cannot be viewed with the current version of the Data Viewer.

The details of the ADC Data Viewer and its related tools were described in the
October 1997 article, which is also available at
http://adf.gsfc.nasa.gov/adf/visualization/ .

                    Gail L. Schneider (Raytheon STX)

The following catalogs and journal tables are currently available from the
ADC. In addition to our major journals, we now have publications from other
journals.

We would like to thank the CDS, AAS and individual authors for making many of
the listed catalogs and journal tables available for our archival.

See http://adc.astro.umd.edu/adc/acq_new_updated.html#new_list for a hypertext
version of this article containing direct links to each catalog and journal
table listed.
