Abstract:
The X-ray emission from the central region of the Galactic plane,
|l|<~45{deg} and |b|<~0.4{deg}, was studied in the 0.710keV energy
band with a spatial resolution of ~3' with the Advanced Satellite for
Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) observatory. We developed a new
analysis method for the ASCA data to resolve discrete sources from the
extended Galactic ridge X-ray emission (GRXE). We successfully
resolved 163 discrete sources with an X-ray flux down to
10^-12.5^ergs/cm^2^/s and determined the intensity variations of the
GRXE as a function of the Galactic longitude with a spatial resolution
of about 1{deg}.

Note (1): The asterisk on a source name denotes reduced accuracy because
the source location is near the edge of the field of view.
Note (2): Uncertainty of the position coordinates is ~1.0'=0.016{deg}
Ueda et al., 1999, Cat. <J/ApJ/518/656>
Note (3): Flux obtained from image fitting analysis are shown in
counts/ks/GIS (countrate for a single GIS detector -- ASCA has two
GISs), a count rate observed at the GIS nominal position, for each
energy band. Blanks mean no source candidates in the energy band.
Note (4): Best-fit parameters of a power-law model, photon index Gamma,
absorption column density N_H_ (10^22^cm^-2^), flux
(10^-12^ergs/cm^2^/s) in 0.7-10keV and reduced {Chi}.{Chi}_{nu}_ for
10 degrees of freedom, are shown for the sources with the significance
above 5{sigma}. All errors represent 90% confidence limits.
Blanks in the errors mean that the best-fit power-law model is
unacceptable within a 97% confidence limit ({Chi}_{nu}_<2).
Note (5): Identified catalog sources within the position determination
accuracy of 1' in the Einstein IPC X-ray Source Catalog (2E, Cat.
<IX/13>), the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (1RXS, Cat.
<IX/10>), the Green Galactic SNR Catalogue (G, Cat. <VII/211>), and
catalogues of optical stars in SIMBAD database (SIM).

* 18-Dec-2001: thanks to checks by Stephen A. Drake
(drake@olegacy.gsfc.nasa.gov), explanations of the flux parameters
were corrected, as well as errors on Gamma and NH, and error in the
definition of the ChiNu2 parameter.
